Why Overenthusiastic Parents Are Not Helpful To Young Athletes?

When very young athletes are involved in specific sports activities, patents often encourage them to do their best. Unfortunately, some parents tend to cross the line between fully supporting and completely embarrassing them with overzealous supports. It is considered as a fabulous way to cheer on our kids to provide support and show then we are proud of them. However, some parents could start to argue with game officials and coaches. They may also yell on the opposing team and this situation will clearly embarrass children. Getting children involved in sports should provide plenty of benefits, but it doesn’t mean that parents could cause a scene that totally embarrasses their children.

With sports, children should gain self confidence and more positive role in the society. They should be able to develop choice-making abilities and reasoning. Unfortunately overenthusiastic parents could bring children to the opposite direction. It is true that we need to support children unconditionally, but it also means that we should show them good sportsmanship. For many parents, it can be an emotional experience to see children perform for the first time. It is obvious that we want them to do well and we need to make sure that they do their best. If we want them to win, we should try to boost their self confidence and our presence shouldn’t become something that may hinder them.

Name-calling to the opposing team and yelling at officials would immediately take the excitement out of the game. Parents who also want to watch their children playing, could be annoyed as well. Irrational parents can be difficult to deal with and it is important for coaches to approach the overenthusiastic parents in a proper way. We may call a team meeting to discuss about proper parents’ behaviours. The situation should be discussed with as many parents as possible. We will find that many people don’t approve such behaviours. The behaviour could be unhealthy and embarrassing for children.

It would be helpful if there are parents who are friendly to the offender, because they can engage in a less confrontation discussion about the situation. The problem can be complicated if there’s no one who want to address these offenders. In this case, it is necessary to call a team meeting to define guidelines that parents need to follow. Consequences need to be discussed if parents violate the guidelines. The League officials may need to be contacted if it is difficult to work things out with the family of the team. This should be a valid action if a group of adults perform the offensive actions.

In some cases, parents can be quite negative to their own children. This will also produce a whole new set of issues. Affected children need to be assisted if they have negative parents. Coaches and other adults should let children know that they are aware of the whole situation. If parents can do something about it, the whole sporting activity can be more enjoyable.
