When it’s summer, it is a great time for vacations. However, we would find that food temptations are just lurking around all corners. Healthy eating could be among the last thing in our mind. Regardless of our travel destination, we shouldn’t give up on consuming healthy meals. The secret of achieving nutrition success is by finding a balance between large, healthy portions and simple indulgences that may include occasional high-fat options. When we are planning to go for a family road trip, we should leave on a full tank on both the car’s fuel tank in our belly. We should have a full, healthy meal just before we start the trp.
In the car, we could prepare some snack or light meal. This should provide us with additional energy when we are travelling for the long haul. We should be aware that fast food joints and restaurants on the road could often provide high-fat and greasy options; although they can be incredibly tasty. In this case, we should choose restaurants that provide healthier alternatives, such as mixed green salads and healthier sandwiches with grilled chicken breast or fish. This should be an effective way to reduce fat intake. We could also bring a cooler where we keep chopped fruits.
Instead of visiting a restaurant, we could find a great place to picnic. This is a good way to take in some fresh air and stretch our legs. We could also let kids burn off some excess energy, so they will become quieter when we resume our trip. We could eat fresh fruit, yogurt, peanut butter sandwiches, trails mix and only plain, bottled water for drinks. During a long trip we should stay clear of coffee drinks and soda pop. When we are running out of healthy food supplies, we can go to grocery stores while we are travelling. This will allow us to stay energized while consuming healthy food.
Travellers should also know how they can fly healthily. Flying can be a more sensible option when the destination area is located across the sea. However, it can be difficult to rely on airport food courts to get healthy food. A timesaving option is bring our own food. We can prepare it in home or in hotel room, after a visit in grocery stores. It is certainly unpractical to bring liquid foods when we go to airport, so we could choose solid foods, such as healthy sandwich. We can use whole-grain bread, plenty of veggies and low-fat meat for our sandwich. Preparing for fruit juices would be impractical too, so we can bring a bottle of water.
In order to avoid cravings, we could also prepare a box of roasted peanuts. In a hotel, we could choose the continental breakfast, because it is often healthier than American breakfast. It could be consisted of orange juice, fresh fruits, yogurt and toasts as source of carbohydrate. During a trip, it is nearly impossible to avoid full-fat meals, so we should watch our portions.
